A Riverview Legacy Story – The Grant's

Lukas Grant – Chapter 1.7 – I Take Paris Part 2

I was frantic. Unable to get a connection on my cell and blocked in by the rocks in front of the door all I could do was wait for help. My only hope was that the tour guide would check up on us at our hotel later like he said he would.

Then next morning I started to hear a sound at the entrance to the room we were in. Someone had come to find us. Gustave Delven was there with the rescue team and we were rushed to the hospital emergency room.

Dr. Jean Luke Stewart rushed down the hall to the trauma room. He heard there had been a collapse at the Lost Burial Ground catacombs and some tourist had been trapped over night. One was a severe head trauma which was his specialty and he had been called in on his day off. The doctor could hear a voice from the trauma room ranting and raving that someone do something to help his wife. “I am sure Amelie can handle it. She is a pretty authoritative nurse and runs a tight ship”, he thought.

“Nurse, where is the doctor? My wife needs a doctor RIGHT NOW!”, Lukas yelled. “Just calm down Mr. Grant, Dr. Stewart is on his way. He is a specialist in head injuries and he has been consulting with the other doctors who saw her when she arrived.”, Nurse Amelie Durand said calmly yet firmly.

“You don’t understand, we just got married this week, I can’t loose her. We were separated by bad circumstances for 4 years and just recently got back together. She is everything to me. You have got to do something to help her.”, Lukas pleaded. “I know Mr. Grant. We are doing everything we possibly can. Here is Dr. Stewart now.”, Nurse Amelie said gently.

“Mr. Grant, I am Dr. Stewart, I will be in charge of your wife’s care. I am a head trauma specialist and I have been briefed about her situation. Let me examine her now to make some preliminary judgments about her condition. Is there anyone you need to call at this time? There is a waiting room on the second floor down the hall from where her room will be. I come by later and we will have a talk.”, said Dr. Stewart. “Ok doctor, I can call her father and tell him what happened. I am sure he will want to be here. Thank you.” Lukas said as he turned to leave the trauma room.

Out in the hallway, Lukas dreaded the call he was about to make. Norman would be so worried and would want to come right away. He hoped his health would stand up to the trip and the stress. Lukas listened to the dial tone and dialed the number. “Norman, this is Lukas. I don’t know how to say this but there has been an accident here in Paris. We were in the catacombs below a burial ground and there was an earthquake. I had to dig Elaine out from under some rubble and she has a serious head injury. She is in the hospital and the doctors and nurses are doing everything they can.” “I be there on the next available flight Lukas. I will call the airline now and get a ticket and call you back with my arrival time. It will all be ok son. We are going to get through this and it will all be ok. Take care son. I will call you back soon.” And with that Norman hung up.

Lukas made his way up to the waiting room and sat down. He couldn’t believe how wrong everything had gone. It had all been going so well he thought as he got up to pace the waiting room floor. Where was Dr. Stewart! He said he would be up to talk to me. He looked at his father’s watch, it had been an hour since he had talked to the doctor.

“Mr. Grant, I am glad to find you here. The preliminary findings show no broken bones but the head injury could be very serious. You said she has not regained consciousness since the accident? It has been about 18 hours now. While she is not in what you would consider a coma, the fact that she has not regained consciousness concerns me. The sooner she wakes up the better in these types of situations. We will keep an eye on her and monitor her closely over the next 48 hours to see how she progresses. She has been moved to her room down the hall and you may go in and spend some time with her, but I encourage you to go and get some rest and clean up and take care of yourself too. You are no good to her if you don’t.

The next 2 days until Norman arrived were a blur. I went to the hotel to shower and change and came back to the hotel to sit by her bedside until she woke up. Her vitals were stable but she had lost a lot of blood and had several transfusions. Still no change.
